The Airside Operations Internship program is valuable not only for the department but also for the individual that fills the position. As a department, the intern is relied upon heavily for special projects, will be involved in the day-to-day operations on the airfield and as able, assist during incidents either from the airfield or the EOC. During their time with Airside Operations, the intern will experience unique situations that occur at one of the world's largest and busiest airports that cannot be taught in the classroom.
In addition to learning from aviation professionals, the Airfield Operations intern assists Airside Operations Section in maintaining online document library and compiling monthly metrics for the airport that are forwarded to the Manager of Aviation. The metrics consist of, for examples, DEN's On-Time Performance, EOC Activation, Total Passengers and Security Wait Times. The intern also supports general administrative tasks, e.g. preparing materials and supplies for event/ incident reports, develop and analyze various types of Airfield Operations reports as well as attending meetings, conferences and other educational classes.
Required Education: Must be a current student who has completed two or more years of college coursework in Aviation Management or closely related field.
Denver International Airport (DEN) is the 5th-busiest commercial passenger airport in the United States, spanning 53 square miles, and serves 54 million passengers annually. It operates the 4th busiest airfield in the world, including North America's longest commercial runway at 16,000 feet. Additionally, DEN is well underway with construction on several substantial projects, including the Westin hotel (which opened in November 2015) and a commuter-rail station that is set to open this spring. We have also just completed construction of 5 new gates, a 9000 acre Airport City in the planning stage, and has a capital budget of $1.6B over the next 5 years – offering an extraordinary opportunity to lead at a time of growth. As the nation's newest major commercial airport, and with the combined assets of good geographic location and large physical size, DEN has the capacity to double in size and is well-positioned for future growth as the portal for the Rocky Mountain Region and a key link for products and people throughout the world. DEN is the primary economic engine of the state of Colorado, generating more than $26B in annual economic impact.
