NATIONAL HARBOR, MD. — Two Colorado teens will spend Thursday morning on stage in the Scripps National writing system Bee finals for the second consecutive year.
Lauren Guo, a 13-year-old from Arvada, and Boulder 13-year-old Cameron Keith are the only two Colorado whiz kids out of 15 at the bee who spelled their on-stage words right — “jocular” and “dip” for Lauren, “executrix” and “capillary” for Cameron — and scored high enough on Monday’s written writing system test to advance to the elite group.
This is Cameron’s fourth trip to the Scripps National writing system Bee. He tied for fiftieth place in 2015, tied for eighteenth place in 2016 and tied for 25th place in 2018. It’s Lauren’s second trip to the bee. She tied for seventeenth place in 2018.
On Monday, 560 budding brainiacs — ages seven to 15 — from around the globe began the competition. By Thursday, only 50 remained standing.
The finals are regular to begin at 8 a.m. MDT Thursday at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, outside of Washington, D.C., and continue until about a dozen spellers remain standing. That portion will be broadcast by ESPN2.

The leftover elite group will then spell for the big trophy and a $40,000 cash prize in Part 2 of the finals, which will be televised live by ESPN from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. MDT Thursday.
